Kendra Project

March 8-12

This week has been a pretty good week for us as far as our project goes! We got to have our first board meeting on Monday, which was very good and let us feel a sense of accomplishment for all our work. I felt like we could have been a little more prepared, but there were several compliments that we received from other members of the board. I feel like for our first time doing a board meeting, however, that we were professional and gave it our best! Then on Tuesday morning we met with Dr. Millard for our weekly meeting and that was good because he was able to debrief us and talk to us a little bit about things that we could have done better and how to improve for the next meeting, but he did say that for our first one, he thought we did a nice job. Then T.J. and I spent about an hour after that typing up the minutes and notes from the board meeting, so that we could send that out to all the board members and they could add anything that we might have missed.

My greatest challenge this week was definitely that we didn’t have enough time to work on preparing for our board meeting, since we were coming right from spring break, we felt a little bit unprepared jumping right into having the board meeting. I think this added to our stress quite a bit since T.J. and I both like to be prepared before and not wait until the last minute to do things.

BUT, my greatest joy was definitely having the first board meeting and getting that behind us, and knowing it was a success. Now I think we know what we need to do for our next one and have a little better idea of how to prepare!

One leadership lesson that I learned this week was that we needed to study more about how board meetings are run and maybe have more information about some different things in our organization so that we can inform the members in our group. I guess this is just something I had to live and learn from, so I will know better next time!

Question: Does anyone have any tips for us as we prepare for our next board meeting? Or any tips at all on bylaws for a board?!

  1. FOOD! :) I definately think it should be prepared well with actions in pursuit or being taken. I think people get tired of going to meetings just to talk so if you can start something or some sort of homework. but definately bring snack food
