What I'm currently working on is continuing to look at what other schools do to help students gain not only head knowledge but the practical skills and tools to deepen their relationship with Christ. I have shifted my focus, however, from the academic side of things to the student life side of things. I've been looking at things such as chapel, residence life, and ministry programs. One interesting one I've found is Anam Cara, a ministry at Anderson University that links upperclassmen, underclassmen, and faculty/staff in one on one mentoring relationships. Anam Cara means soul friend in the Celtic tradition.
My greatest joy this week was finding out that there is already a discussion happening about my cause. The research is largely missing, though, and that is what I'm doing right now. That is also the greatest challenge at the moment.
The leadership lesson I learned this week is to keep my thinking broad. I was being narrow in thinking by only looking at academic courses before. There's a lot of great things outside of classes that can be done too. I'm not sure exactly how it can tie in to creating a new course yet though.
I guess my question for the week is does anyone have an idea for how a mentoring system could possibly work for our campus, or could it?
It can, they already have mentoring programs going on at North Hall. Maybe you can check into see how that works?
ReplyDeleteI definitely think it could work. I love the idea of having faculty as mentors but they are so busy it would be tough to balance that and their other responsibilities.
ReplyDeleteI really like the idea of faculty as mentors too, I think that would help students a ton! But I also realize that they are busy since most of them already have a big class load and stuff on their schedules. I just feel like if that could work, it would need to start small and then would eventually catch people's attention and they would join. I just think its a great idea with faculty because they have so much knowledge of the career you are going into and could help you a lot with your job search after school.
